Norrsjö natural forests, Strömsund, Jämtland County. The FSC-certified forest company SCA plans to log several valuable old natural forests adjacent to the village Norrsjö, despite the forests’ documented high conservation values and protests from villagers and several environmental organizations. Many old natural forests in Sweden are still unprotected and many of them are being logged. This happens, even though, all big forest companies in Sweden have certified their forest land according to the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC - international organization for certification of forestry and forest products, which aims to encourage environmentally, socially and economically responsible management of the world’s forests), and despite the fact that Sweden is committed, internationally and nationally, to safeguard a living forest landscape. It happens despite the knowledge that only a few percent of the former productive old natural forests remain. Protecting these forests is a prerequisite for Sweden to preserve its biodiversity, a living nature. The collection of illustrative examples in this gallery show threatened oases of diversity and beauty of the Swedish forest landscape. The photos show glimpses of formally unprotected old natural forests and/or forest areas with high conservation values planned to be logged. Some of the photos are taken in already protected forests, to show the magnificence, which is almost lost. The photos are documented by non-profit nature conservationists from Protect the Forest, Swedish Society for Nature Conservation and the Research field-trip to the outskirts of Nature Conservation. All rights belong to the photographers and the organizations.
